I am super excited to report that today was the first time in my life that I was able to pursue ‘mature musicological research’ in my home town, Peitz. I am hoping to examine the socio-cultural background and reception of the Peitz Jazzwerkstatt (‘Jazz workshop’), a jazz festival which was initiated in the 1970s and was then discontinued in 1982. The tradition was revived recently, however, and I am lucky to have been told today that there is currently an exhibition on the Jazz scene in Eastern Germany (before and after the ‘Iron Curtain’) in Peitz. What a shame that I’ll be missing this year’s Jazzwerkstatt (8-10 June), but I cannot wait to visit the museum on Saturday shortly before I return to Ireland. I am grateful to Dirk Redies at Rathaus Peitz for giving me loads of advice and contacts, and I hope to find out more in due course. The photo shows the Peitz Rathaus and the market square.
